The Children's Laureate | Laureate na nÓg

The Innagural laureate for children's literature was announced by President of Ireland Mary McAleese on May 10th 2010.This unique honour was awarded to author Siobhán Parkinson. Siobhán Parkinson writes fiction for children and young people (and occasionally for adults). She has published more than twenty books since 1992, and her work has been translated into as many languages. Her position as Laureate na nÓg will be held by Siobhán Parkinson for a period of two years.

The Children's laureate is an initiative of The Arts Council with the support of the Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Children's Books Ireland and Poetry Ireland.You can read more about Laureate na nÓg on the dedicated website -www.childrenslaureate.ie

 

The important aims of this project aims are to

1.    Introduce high quality children's literature to a new audience of adults, children and young people

2.    Raise the profile of children's literature in Ireland

3.    Increase media attention for children's literature in Ireland and internationally

4.    Bring children's literature into the mainstream conversation about books and literature in Ireland

5.    Build partnership and cooperation among various players in the children's literature sector 

The Laureate position is awarded to an established and dynamic children's writer or illustrator and the position will be held for a period of two years. During this term they will participate in selected events and initiatives. The laureate, in partnership with the steering committee, will develop the focus of their two-year term.

Nominations for future laureates will be reviewed based on the following criteria:

·      The Laureate must be deemed to hold an internationally recognised body of high quality children's writing and/or illustration.

·      The Laureate must be deemed to have made a particularly significant contribution to the field of children's literature in Ireland and have had a considerably positive impact on readers as well as other writers and illustrators.

·      The Laureate must demonstrate both eagerness and skill in engaging with children, young people, adults, and media and with the sector as a whole.

·      The Laureate should demonstrate an enthusiasm for promoting children's literature in general.

Tionscnamh de chuid na Comhairle Ealaíon is ea Laureate na nÓg a bhfuil tacaíocht aige ó Oifig an Aire Leanaí, Leabhair Pháistí Éireann agus Éigse Éireann.

Is é aidhm an tionscadail seo ná:

1.    Litríocht ardchaighdeáin do leanaí a chur os comhair lucht léite nua idir dhaoine fásta, leanaí agus dhaoine óga

2.    Próifíl litríochta do leanaí in Éirinn a ardú

3.    Aird na meán in Éirinn agus ar fud an domhain a dhíriú ar litríocht do leanaí

4.    Cinntiú go mbeidh litríocht do leanaí á plé nuair a bhíonn cúrsaí leabhar agus litríochta in Éirinn á bplé

5.    Comhpháirtíocht agus comhoibriú a chur chun cinn i measc na ndreamanna éagsúla a bhfuil baint acu le litríocht do leanaí

Déanfar Laureate de scríbhneoir nó de mhaisitheoir dinimiciúil cruthanta a shaothraíonn ábhar do leanaí. Mairfidh an post ar feadh tréimhse dhá bhliain.  Glacfaidh an duine a cheapfar páirt in imeachtaí agus i dtionscnaimh a roghnófar i gcaitheamh an ama sin.  Oibreoidh an laureate i gcomhar leis an gcoiste stiúrtha chun clár agus cuspóirí a leagadh síos don tréimhse dhá bhliain sin.
