Little Island authors - all you need to know... |

Before she was crowned Laureate na nÓg in May, Siobhán Parkinson was already making waves in 2010 by establishing a brand new Irish children's press - Little Island, an imprint of New Island.
With a number of titles already released and more to follow in the next few months, they have certainly hit the ground running and we're delighted that several of their authors have put themselves forward for involvement in festival events.
As many of these names will still be unfamiliar at this time, I thought it might be useful to give a run-down of each author and title here. For further information and booking availability, please email Elaina O'Neill <elaina(dot)oneill(at)newisland.ie> who will be happy to answer any enquiries.

CBF 2010: Programme Support to Libraries |

More positive news, this time concerning support for CBF library events...
Children’s Books Ireland, in partnership with Foras na Gaeilge and Poetry Ireland, are offering designated programme support to assist library authorities participating in this year’s Children’s Books Festival.
Up to 32 funding packages of €400 are available to library authorities seeking to organise live literature events for young readers during October. Those wishing to stage Irish language events can also apply for an additional €400, meaning every authority can potentially be awarded €800 in support towards their programming costs.
It is our belief – and one supported by evidence supplied from librarians across the country – that involvement in readings, workshops and other festival activities provides a unique opportunity for young readers to engage with both books and library services. Equally, we also understand how the serious staffing and resource challenges currently being faced by the libraries puts pressure on your capacity for taking part in events like the festival.
In these difficult circumstances, CBI is looking to re-affirm its commitment to maintaining the festival as a truly national event by offering EVERY library authority in the country the opportunity to apply for funding to present high quality books and literature-focused events in their locality.
To avail of this opportunity, we are now calling upon each authority to submit an events funding proposal before Wednesday 21st July. If you are interested in taking part or wish to request an application form, please contact Programme Officer Tom Donegan either

Hello and welcome to the first festival blog-post of 2010! I'm please to say that we've some very exciting news in store to get the ball rolling ...
Every year, CBI invites an up-and-coming Irish illustrator to create an original artwork to be used on CBF merchandise and printed materials. We are delighted to announce that Kevin Waldron has agreed to take the commission for 2010 and is currently working on a fantastically bright and eye-catching design for this October.
Born in Dublin in 1979, Kevin has since lived in both London and now New York, where he is a close associate of fellow emigre artist Oliver Jeffers.
His first children's title, the self-authored Mr Peek at the Zoo (Templar, 2009) won the Opera Prima award at Bologne and has recently been followed by a fantastic new picture-book version of Edward Lear's classic poem The Owl and the Pussy-Cat (Simon and Schuster, 2010).
His next publication will see him collaborating with no-lesser writer than former UK poet-laureate Michael Rosen, on Tiny Little Fly, published by Walker Books and due out this autumn.
Initial festival poster sketches reveal a feline theme with a very retro feel and we can't wait to see the finished result. Watch this space for further updates...
Meanwhile, if you're interested you can find out more about Kevin at: http://www.kevinwaldron.co.uk/ TD

Just a quick update on the WRITE STUFF author residencies project, which saw three intrepid writers posted to counties Monaghan, Longford and Sligo last month to work with young people on developing their creative writing skills.
If you haven't yet checked out the website recently you REALLY must do so, as some cracking stories, poems and visual art pieces have now been posted showing a truely impressive array of talent and imagination.
Congratulations to all those involved and a extra special THANK YOU to Celine Kiernan, Mary Melvin Geoghegan and David Donohue for their commitment and enthusiasm towards this project.
CBI is also very graetful to the Irish Copyright Licensing Agency for their generous sponsorship of this innovative programme.
Happy reading! TD

Author and publisher Anna McQuinn has just submitted this report following her festival visit to Griffeen Valley Educate Together in Lucan. You can find out more about Anna and her books here. Some great photos are also included below - thanks Anna!
On Friday 16th, I was delighted to visit The Griffeen Valley Educate Together School. I’d never been in an Educate Together school before and I was very impressed.
First I visited two infants classes and we talked about how a book is made.
We used my book, Lulu Loves the Library...
