Children’s Book Festival Competitions 2011

Whatsitsname?!

For this year’s poster competition we asked you to come up with a name for the book-eating monster who appears on the Children’s Book Festival poster.

We’re delighted to announce that this year’s winner is Lauryn Brady age 11, who won €1000-worth of books for her school, Gaelscoil Uí Riada, Wilton, Cork! Lauryn has named our monster ‘Bookie Monster‘ and describes what he eats for breakfast- “My monster is trying to lose weight so he would have 10 books and a dictionary smoothie. As a treat I might let him have a hardback. Only one.” Well done Lauryn and congratulations also to the runners-up, Róisin Lawless, Darragh Doherty, Shauna O’Connor, Hannah Fitzgerald and James MacCarthy!

O’Brien Press Design-A-Cover Competition

This year CBI teamed up with the O‘Brien Press yet again to give budding designers the chance to see their artwork featured on the cover of a professionally published book. This year the chosen title was Four Kids, Three Cats, Two Cows, a Witch (Maybe) by Siobhán Parkinson.

We’re delighted to announce that the winner is Alicia Premkumar, age 9 from Carlow! Alicia will not only see her design (on the left) gracing the shelves in her local library or bookshop, but will have her entire class invited to an awards ceremony and will win five sets of all Siobhán Parkinson’s O’Brien Press titles for her school! Congratulations also to Jane Brazil, Donnybrook, Dublin 4 who was the second-place winner and runners-up Niamh O’Dwyer, Celbridge, Co. Kildare, Arisha Khan, Ballincollig, Co. Cork, Aoife Adila Feroz Fazidi Mohamed, Lucan, Co Dublin and Dana Postoronca, Templeogue, Dublin.

The new edition of the book with Alicia’s design on the cover, and the 2nd place and runners-up featured inside, will be published in Spring 2012.
